Wingstop experience from the wing experts

I've heard a lot about Wingstop from my sister since she first tried this with her hubby and it became an instant hit with them. She keeps telling us to visit one of their branches in the metro and get to taste the flavorful chicken wings. And finally I gave in! I was invited by our friends from Wingstop to get the real deal of their flavorful chicken wings and visit the newly opened Wingstop branch in Glorietta 2.

 

The Wingstop branch is located in front of Landmark, Makati. Wingstop specialized in flavorful wings and has been around for 21 years. What is their success after all this years? Flavor! Wingstop captured and perfected the 9 recipes with flavors that makes everyone crave for them.

It was my first time to visit a Wingstop branch and the opening was a huge success with good food + good music + good company. Wingstop opened their first door to us last year and has 7 stores currently open and eyeing to open 50 more stores in the next 6 years. With Wingstop, we can now experience Texas-sized wings cooked and served in their award-winning style.

Flavor is a one word that describes and defines Wingstop. With 9 flavors to choose from, everyone will have their own preferences but I'm sure everyone will also find a favorite. Mine is garlic parmesan flavored chicken wings. :) Wingstop also served flavorful french fries and chicken tenders.


Wingstop chicken are cooked to order to make it always fresh.

Atomic: sauce, sweat and tears. It's a habanero-fueled punch in the mouth for those who are into that sort of thing.

Be a Goldilocks Junior Crew this summer

Before summer vacation started last March Sofi and I were on the lookout of summer activities for her. Good thing Goldilocks invited Sofi to be one of their first Junior Crew. She was excited to be part of their Junior Crew program.

The Goldilocks Junior Crew is a 5-day, 2 hours per day workshop for kids from ages 6-12 years of age who love to learn, work, play, and have fun all at the same time and experience what it's like to be behind the scenes of the country’s number one bakeshop. 


It was a fun learning experience for Sofi and a memorable one too since it was her first time to be part of a crew.  In addition to an educational immersion store experience (though the kitchen is off limits, due to safety concerns), children will get to participate in various games and art sessions, as well as the fan favorite Goldilocks Decorate Your Cake activity.

They were given complete set of uniform with cap, apron, id, pin and shirt. rt materials, meals, and a certificate of participation are also included.

Her batch was composed of 10 kids and all were eager and very much game to participate. Our workshop was held in SM Megamall.

One of the activities were approaching tables and offer them delectable delights of Goldilocks products. It's one way of overcoming shyness but of course each kid were guided before they approach customers.

Making friends is one of the fun things at the workshop.

After each "duty", they were rewarded with simple activities like drawing, coloring and many more.

At the end of the 5 day workshop, Goldilocks Junior Crew held a mini graduation and Sofi was excited to receive her certificate of completion. She told me she will miss all of their activities. 

Ayan na! Before whenever there's a presentation and someone asked Sofi to dance or sing nahihiya sya. But during the graduation she told me that she volunteered to present a solo dance in the tune of All about that bass. Good job, babe!

MTV Music Evolution 2015

(NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), today announced the addition of the final international hip hop act, Filipino-American rapper, record producer and dancer, Apl.de.ap who completes the performers’ line-up at the MTV Music Evolution 2015, set to take place at the historic Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park in Manila on Sunday, 17 May 2015. One of Philippines’ pride, Apl.de.ap will be bringing some of his own sounds, since he went solo in 2012, while remaining a key member of The Black Eyed Peas. The previously announced acts include Naughty by Nature, YG, DJ Mustard, Gloc-9 and Abra.

DDB Group Philippines, PCW shine the spotlight on the ‘bigger fight’ in society: Violence against Women

As the world awaits the “Fight of the Century” between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., advocates of anti-violence against women wish to bring to light the “bigger fight” that is happening almost every day in Filipino homes – that of domestic violence.

DDB Group Philippines has collaborated with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) to shine the spotlight on violence against women to open everyone’s eyes on fights that have not been getting  the kind of attention that they should be getting.  


The much anticipated square-off between two of the greatest fighters of this generation is deemed as the best time to create awareness and gather support for the different kinds of violence being committed by males versus women. Not to mention that Pacquiao’s nemesis, Mayweather, has a record of committing this kind of offenses.

DDB Group Philippines and its subsidiary Tribal Worldwide, have come up with a campaign that will ride on the May 3 super fight to help the Philippine Commission on Women to create awareness on the often neglected plight of women under their abusive fathers, husbands, male relatives or boyfriends.



In a series of posters shared online and on-ground, in bus ads and newspapers, and strategically placed side-by-side with Pacquiao vs. Mayweather promotional materials, DDB Group Philippines brings this issue out of the shadows and gets people talking, so they can prevent domestic violence from happening. 

For her part, PCW Executive Director Emmeline Verzosa said, “Violence against women cuts across all race, religion, age, social demographics and sexuality. It threatens the security of half of humanity and is rooted in men’s desire for ultimate power and control over women. We must put a stop to it.” 

Statistics have shown that one in five women ages 15-49 have or are continuing to suffer from domestic violence and intimate relationship violence since age 15.  In 2010, cases of VAW reported to the Philippine National Police (PNP) rose to 59 percent, with majority of the victims knowing their attackers.

Chua said, “As a group, we at DDB Philippines always try to do our share in making the world a better place, and supporting the fight against domestic violence is just one of our ways to achieve this. Guevarra emphasized, “Our shave for a cause campaign aims to help our target beneficiaries, in this case, the outstanding young adults assisted by the Life Project 4 Youth. Hopefully, we can further aid their needs, going beyond the grooming and moving forward to change their lives.”

Schick targets to donate P100, 000.00 on this event which will benefit the projects and programs of Life Project 4 Youth. The awarding ceremony will be conducted in the activity center.

Guevarra concluded, “Through this effort, we not only help young adults achieve healthy grooming but also transform the way they perceive their selves, one shave at a time.”

Karnitas Korner’s 1st ANYversary + mouthwatering Porchetta experience

I was invited to try the new hole in the wall resto that hits the popular food tripping place at Kapitolyo, Pasig. I'm not really familiar how Porchetta is done and what it taste like, but Karnitas Korner made my experience memorable as I can still remember the crunchiness of its pork strips. Yum! 


Karnitas Korner was established to be a go-to place where people can enjoy gourmet dish and porchetta in a casual dining setup. Karnitas Korner is located at Phil-am road in Kapitolyo. 

There is yet to be a porchetta restaurant in Metro Manila and Karnitas Korner offers this (even for same day order of whole porchetta) with gourmet ciabatta sandwiches (one of it is Porchetta Sandwich) and other gourmet dishes. 
So why is it called Karnitas Korner? Carnitas means small pieces of meat. It refers to the sliced porchetta cut into small pieces and added to different dishes like Porchetta Tacos, Porchetta Carbonara and Porchetta Nachos.

To make it more Filipino and because it has a K, “carnitas”  is changed to “karnitas”, adding to the Italian and Mexican flavors of its dishes. 


Aside from their signature dishes, Karnitas Korner also offers delectable cookies to satisfy the sweet cravings or sweet tooth.

So, here's the highlight of my visit to Karnitas Korner. Haha! But seriously, it was my first time to see a Porchetta (pronounced as por’ketta) and it is a savory, fatty, and moist boneless roast pork. 
Rooting from Italian culinary tradition where the pork loin is arranged carefully with layers of stuffing- meat, fat, crispy skin and garlic, rosemary, fennel, or other herbs, it is then rolled and roasted, traditionally over wood.


As I've mentioned, while the kuya was preparing the Porchetta sandwich, we can hear the crunchiness of its pork strips while slicing the balat or pork skin. The mouthwatering experience is one for the books! :D

And ta-dah! Karnitas Korner Porchetta Sandwich is a must try!

They also served us Poutine aka fries. It's a fries with homemade cheese sauce, gravy, jalapenos and sweet longganisa.

Porchetta Nachos is good for sharing. It has tex-mex cheese sauce with porchetta bit, mango salsa and sliced jalapenos.

Porchetta Tacos is made of porchetta, herb-roasted corn slaw, crispy pork rinds, sweet chili sauce with chipotle sour cream on the side.

Porchetta Sandwich

Another winner is their Porchetta served with rice. It is made of succulent pork loin oven roasted to perfection with soft boiled egg and roasted corn slaw.

Felt like a kid when they served us this dessert. The freshly made cookie du jour was an icing on a cake to end my Karnitas Korner food tripping.

Good news from Meralco! Power rates down this month

 I think this is one of the best news so far! The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said that overall rates went down by PhP 0.70 per kilowatthour (kWh) this May. Said decrease is due to lower generation costs from all power suppliers of Meralco.  

For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, the overall electricity bill will go down by PhP 140.  At PhP 9.98 per kWh, this month’s rate is lower by PhP 1.46 compared to May 2014’s PhP 11.44 per kWh.

Lower generation costs from all suppliers

Generation charge decreased by PhP 0.60 per kWh from PhP 5.41 per kWh in April to PhP 4.81 per kWh this month.  The reduction was mainly driven by lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), as well as a reduction in the National Power Corporation’s (NPC’s) Generation Rate Adjustment Mechanism (GRAM) collections. 

Cost of power obtained from the WESM decreased by PhP 4.19 per kWh due to less occurrences and shorter duration of power plant outages. The Luzon Grid remained on “normal” state throughout the period of the Malampaya shutdown.

Meanwhile, average cost of the Independent Power Producers (IPP) was lower by PhP 0.75 per kWh due to the improved utilization level of the QPPL power plant and cheaper fuel prices obtained by the First Gas plants. The effect of the Malampaya shutdown was moderated by lower prices of condensate and natural gas in the April supply month versus March. Malampaya natural gas underwent its quarterly repricing to reflect the lower cost of fuel. From $10.39 per gigajoule (GJ) the previous period, price of natural gas has been reduced by 19% to $8.44 per GJ.

Changes in Residential Bill
Average rates of plants under the Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) also decreased this month by PhP 0.06 per kWh.  Finally, NPC’s collections of its GRAM similarly went down by PhP 0.06 per kWh.
The share of IPPs, PSAs, and WESM to Meralco’s total power requirements stood at 47, 43, and 10 percent respectively.

Adjustments in other bill components
In addition to the generation charge, taxes and other charges registered reductions of PhP 0.07 and PhP 0.08 per kWh, respectively.   These offset a PhP 0.05 per kWh increase in the transmission charge.

Meralco reiterated that it does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Of the total bill, only the distribution, supply, and metering charges accrue to Meralco. Meralco’s distribution charge has not registered any adjustment and has remained at the same level for 10 months now or since July 2014.

Meralco supports Electrical Safety Month
Meralco also reminded its customers to observe electrical safety in line with its initiatives to support Electrical Safety Month.

The government has declared the month of May of every year as Electrical Safety Month. Meralco said it fully supports initiatives that raise public awareness and educate electricity consumers on the proper use of electrical appliances and gadgets so as to prevent and avoid electricity-related accidents.

Save mom time in the kitchen with Solane

A mother is often expected to be a superwoman, juggling roles as a mom, a wife, a cook, a housekeeper, and a caregiver for the elders, and many others. Prepare (and use) ingredients and cookware smartly. Related to the first tip, an organized mom prepares all the ingredients and cookware before she starts cooking. This way, she does not run to the pantry and to the fridge each time she needs something. Then, she uses time-saving kitchen tools, including food processor for faster slicing, or blender to puree ingredients that can serve as instant sauce or soup thickener. 

Ingredients like garlic or onions should be prepared in batches, and stored for future use. The order of the cooking should be smart, too: dishes that only require light sauteeing should come before those that will have strong flavors, so that the same pan or cauldron can be used even without washing. Furthermore, cookware should be washed immediately after (or soaked in water) so that it is easier and faster to remove the dirt. 


Plan a weekly menu. Having a weekly menu can excite the whole family. Even better, it lets the mom plan the cooking wisely. Planning to have vegetables as a siding for fish? The veggies can be placed in a steamer on top of the rice. Meat, which usually takes a long time to soften, can be used as a main dish, but some can be set aside to spice up the dishes for the next day. 

A weekly menu can especially help moms who prepare packed lunch and snacks for the family. If they are particularly pressed for time, they can place the cooked dishes in microwaveable containers, and just reheat them on the day these will be eaten.

Turn your trash to cash at SM's Recycling Market

Where can you find a place that can turn your trash into cash? In lieu of Earth Day, I'm glad that SM really cares with the environment and they're doing everything they can to save Mother Earth.

SM Cares celebrated Earth Day by collecting traditional and no-traditional trash in 50 SM Malls nationwide. I was able to witness the process of collecting trash in SM North Edsa during their Earth Day and brought Sofi with me so she will learn as early as now on how to recycle and help the environment.


Eight years ago, SM City Fairview started a sustainability program called Trash to Cash Recycling Market. The program makes SM the first mall in the country to hold such kind of green fair. Four years after its launch, it earned for SM the “Friend of Biodiversity” award from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.


The event also involves the participation of mall tenants, the surrounding community of each mall, and the local government.


The rate of your waste. This is subject to change. 

On regular days, SM’s Trash to Cash Recycling Market is held every first Friday and Saturday of every month, from 10AM to 2PM, at the mall open parking area. The mall offers to exchange cash for recyclable trash materials like papers, cartons, plastics, glass bottles, aluminum and tin cans, and polystyrene. These, in turn, are turned over for recycling. 


Sofi asked me if she can turn her water bottle trash into Php1,000 cash. Haha! But kidding aside, she is now serious in gathering all our trash in the house so she can turn it into cash and buy Anna of Frozen doll. hehe. :D

SM’s Earth Day celebration is in partnership with the Earth Day Network Philippines (EDNP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

I'm glad SM Cares participate in this kind of advocacy that would truly benefit our future kids. Even in simple ways let's take our part of saving Mother Earth by reduce, reuse and recycle.
