Promil Pre-School Gifted Movement launch

If you're a 90's kids, you will remember the gifted children TVC and you might be wondering now what they'll look like after 20 years.

The world has long been fascinated by prodigies—gifted kids whose accomplishments at such a young age, shed light to a child’s inherent talent, intellect and precocity.

In the Philippines, perhaps no other personalities represent the concept and reality of what gifted children are than the three who illustrated it via one of the most memorable television commercials of the 90s—Kiko Galura, James Flores, and Shaira Luna.

But what has become of the three gifted kids featured in the brand’s most prolific commercial yet? The budding poet? The promising astronomer? The medical marvel?

First of all, they’re all grown up now and second, their accomplishments as adults are just as impressive as what they were able to deliver as kids.

James Flores, who was known for his proficiency in astronomy stayed within the sciences, albeit in a different field, taking his masters in clinical psychology. From his love of the stars and their radiance, he helps bring out the brilliance in every child through outreach programs in music for children.

The young poet, Kiko Galura, has an established career as a publisher in one of the country’s biggest publishing houses. From making words come to life in his poems, he now provides an opportunity and a voice to other storytellers.

And finally, Shaira Luna, who was poised to enter into the medical world, grew up to become one of the most talented photographers of her generation. From her mastery of the human anatomy, she now captures the best in human form with her photography, building a successful career around her passion.

Was there ever any doubt that they wouldn't grow up to become successful gifted alumni?

It’s easy to assume things come easily to naturally gifted kids. But it’s important to remember that it’s a factor of different things that will carve out a good future for any child.

“A gifted child can be expected to learn faster than other children, have more varied interests, have greater depth of feeling and generally be more than other children,” explains Dra. Leticia Peñano-Ho, President of the Philippine Center for Gifted Education

And to celebrate the current success of the gifted alumni, Promil Pre-School brought back together the famous trio, almost 20 years after their commercial first aired on national television. The brand’s heritage on giftedness is further exemplified through their achievements and their journey towards becoming valuable gifts to society.

In 2015, Promil Pre-School is launching their Gifted Movement campaign, which is a movement to supporting and celebrating giftedness in the country. The brand aims to spark interest and gain the commitment of moms and consumers to take an active role in advocating giftedness and nurturing it.

“Promil Pre-School, as a catalyst for the Gifted Movement campaign, puts focus on discovering and bringing out the inherent talent of today’s youth, by way of providing the proper nutrition, and proper care,” says Yu. “Combined with the support of parents to continuously encourage kids to find their passion and make learning enjoyable, there’s no end to what this new generation can accomplish, ” she adds.

And as a testament to this, one only needs to look at how these alumni successfully grew to become the passionate, well-rounded individuals they are today.

And as a Mom, it is my responsibility to continue nurturing the gift of my daughter, Sofi. Whatever it is, I will fully support her gift and pray that she will be successful in the field that she will choose in the future. So, let's join the #GiftedMovement campaign of Promil Pre-School.

Thank you Promil Pre-School for this campaign and for helping moms (and parents) like me in nurturing our children's gift.

Camella's newest TVC captures Pinoy's hearts

The city’s fastest growing community for Filipino families, Camella has been churning out one gripping advertisement after another as they make it easier for Pinoys to finally own their dream home. First introducing the highly successful “Bulilit” TV commercial which hit everyone with its honest cuteness, Camella followed with “Bunk Beds” – a more emotional yet comical take on the Filipino situation that equally hits the nail right on the head.

This time, Camella comes up with another TVC – “Isang Sulyap” – a sweet, romantic story that starts within the bounds of the Camella community.

Isang Sulyap Story

The story starts with a wedding, a little boy acting as one of the priest’s helpers spots a little girl sitting in the pew. He smiles while looking at her, uttering the words “I do” beneath his breath while continuously gazing towards her direction.
The scene changes and this time, the boy leaves the church, his faithful dog, Max, running towards him to ‘pick him up’ from the church. Max barks and the little girl – the one he’s been staring at throughout the wedding – looks, smiles, and pets the little dog. He smiles too but the girl is called back and it ends there.

The TVC continues with the little boy constantly thinking about the girl, to the point where he starts drawing her on a piece of paper. The sweet ending here is that the two meets again – within the Camella community of course. With Max acting as Cupid, he directs his ward to the direction of the little girl who happens to be moving in to the community – and that’s when the camera pans out to a cute ending of two kids meeting – and possibly becoming very good friends for life.

Camella uses this precious experience as the setting for its newest television ad.  Interestingly, it is an ad for its master planned communities – vast properties that offer facilities and amenities closer to a city than a mere residential village.

The lasting impression is this: Camella doesn't just help build families but also builds winning communities.

The first two ads are family centered, showing the Filipino people what they have and what they could have by being part of Camella. In “Isang Sulyap,” however, they’ve gone much farther. The creative theme panned out to include communities. The message is clear: Camella is where you find people, friends, families, and neighbors who want and enjoy the same things you do. Peaceful places where your kids are surrounded by safe, trusted, and well-meaning people and families.

Of course, further inspection divulges more than just that. Isang Sulyap and the accompanying catchy song tells the story of a little boy who has everything within easy reach, from a well-respected school to a supermarket. Practically everything is just a few steps away. The commercial also features a park, safe roads, and enough room for kids – and their various pets – to play and frolic.

The tune and the commercial is fast becoming another TV sensation as Camella offers up another TVC that touches the heart strings with a very subtle advertising that nonetheless creates an impact. It’s far from the slightly humorous previous TVCs of Camella, the last one initiated by Pabrika’s Joel Limchoc.

Master-planned Communities

It’s not surprising that Camella went another way with the Isang Sulyap commercial. They are, after all, not only building beautiful houses, but master planned communities with facilities and amenities designed to raise residents’ lifestyles to a level beyond expectations, while making living easy and convenient.

The communities are designed to be almost completely self-contained, offering everything from commercial centers, retail stores, restaurants, convenience stores, drugstores, and groceries or supermarkets; to educational establishments; to even churches and other centers for worship.  All these come with lifestyle facilities that amazingly deck all other Camella properties like clubhouses or function halls, swimming pools, play courts, playgrounds, parks, walkways, and jogging or biking paths.

Going to the Heart of the Matter

Brilliantly created, the Camella team once again came up with something unique that speaks directly to the Filipino heart: the concept of peace and ease of living in a community that helps the family grow in comfort. It’s a very subtle message it would be hard to find an ad concept that does it better. Sure, you might focus on the boy’s crush-at-first-sight experience, but ultimately, it’s all about new beginnings in greener pastures. The “Isang Sulyap” offers the promise of exactly that – and more.

Definitely displaying a deeper understanding of their market, Camella has taken one step forward with this TVC. To put it simply, they’re not just offering home for your family– they’re offering a master planned community, a better way of living, and ultimately, a better future for you and your family. It’s really the Filipino Dream in a bigger, grander scale.

Shared Mission for Sustainable Living x Sachet Recovery Program

I admit. I was ignorant of this mission prior to the event. I didn't know that there is such program as this that helps a lot of Filipinos especially that help build schools, houses and even reach our Yolanda victims. And I'm glad I was able to attend and learned more about the Shared Mission for Sustainable Living held at Mandaluyong Elementary School.

Three industry leaders, Unilever, through its number one laundry brand Surf, Smart Communications and Cebuana Lhuillier have renewed their commitment to champion environmental sustainability.

Their mission is to improve Filipino lives and bringing a brighter future to one billion people worldwide. The Sachet Recovery Program is on its third year and through their joint efforts they can educate more consumers about sustainability and waste recycling.

Since 2013, the Sachet Recovery Program has been teaching proper waste segregation and recycling by encouraging millions of Filipinos to collect empty Surf sachets in exchange for free Smart texts at any Cebuana Lhuillier branch nationwide.

In Year 1, they collected 4.5 million sachets, which they converted into 45,000 pavers. In 2014, they collected an additional 7.5 million empty sachets nationwide. Some of the pavers were readily donated to Barangay Union Coastal of Mayorga, Leyte and served as foundation to the environmentally-friendly facility, Surf Labahan.

This year, the three industry leaders plan to make the Sachet Recovery Program bigger and better! For every sachet surrendered in any of the close to 2,000 Cebuana Lhuillier outlets, consumers will receive 10 free texts from Smart.

I was in awe when I learned this. Surf sachets into pavers? Oh yes! Pavers that will help build schools and houses. And the process of turning sachets into pavers is amazing! One of the best invention ever, don't you agree? It is also a win-win for us! You get to clean your laundry through the use of Surf sachets, help our Filipino communities and you'll also get to have free texts to communicate with your loved ones.

Pavers is heavy and have the same feel as cement blocks

Good news! Smart is expanding its support for this program. Starting this year, Talk 'N Text and Sun subscribers will also be able to exchange their Surf sachets for free text.

Kudos to Smart Communications, Surf and Cebuana Lhuillier for their partnership and for helping hand in hand in helping our environment and building new lives for Filipino people.

During the event, the partners also donated 7,000 cement pavers to the Mandaluyong Elementary School. The construction materials were made from hundreds of thousands of shredded empty sachets that will form pathways to improve school grounds and make walking around the school more convenient for students.

So what are you waiting for? Go and buy Surf in sachets, go to any outlet of Cebuana Lhuillier for redemption and you'll get a 10 free SMS from Smart.

RACKS debuts new look

Did you know that Racks opened its doors in 1992? Oh yes! They've been operating for almost two decades now, and they recently debuted a new look when they opened their two new branches located  one in north and one in the south.

I was invited to check out their new Timog Avenue branch (their 15th store) and got to feel the cozier, homey, country vibe that Racks is trying to imbibe.

RACKS' new look is inspired by southern country American life. Since RACKS stands for Real American Country Kitchen Style (bet you didn't know that. It was actually my first time to hear and learned that there's an acronym for RACKS, hehe), the new interiors has warm tones accentuated by dark wooden panels. Stone bricks were also used as pillars and covering for the indoor grills to give them a more rustic feel. The classic southern country dishes that they serve they also want it to be reflected in their restaurants.

(photo grabbed from ARC Facebook)

(photo grabbed from ARC Facebook)

Their popular onion brick is one of their best-sellers which consists of thinly sliced onion rings, marinated, spiced, lightly breaded then deep fried to a crisp. This is ideal for sharing since its portions are large.

RACKS also serves flame-grilled Angus beef rib eye seasoned with signature steak rubpaired with red wine au jus.

The secret behind this favorite starts with finding the finest baby ribs, butchering and trimming them in-house leaving just the right amount of fat for that special, deep flavour. The baby ribs are then hickory-smoked in a blend of special herbs and spices to achieve a distinct, rich, smoky taste before being fire-grilled and flame-broiled to seal in all the goodness. Slathered with RACKS Original Barbecue Sauce, every serving delivers a dining experience like no other.

RACKS' menu has something for every member of the family. Choices range from pasta dishes, and seafood selections to sald, sandwiches and starters and of course, desserts!

Cheers to good food + good company!! (photo grabbed from ARC Facebook)

RACKS' newest branch occupies a big space at 70 Timog Avenue in Quezon City and can accommodate huge groups.

RACKS is also at El Pueblo, Festival Supermall, Greenhills, Paseo de Magallanes, Paseo de Santa Rosa, Robinson's Manila, SM Fairview, SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North, SM PAmpanga, SM Southmall, The Fort Strip, and Trinoma.

Thank you ARC PR and RACKS for having me. Left the building with a happy tummy and a smile on my face. Buuuuurrrrpppp!!!! :)))

Oral-B launched Smile Pilipinas

$

UP Dental Alumni Association (UPDAA) in partnership with global oral care brand Oral-B launched a program that aims to bring back the healthy smiles of Filipinos. Pinoys are known for their warmth and smile. I remember one foreign journalist reported that despite the calamities, disasters that we went through (when he was here), we Filipinos were hospitable and laging may ngiti sa ating mga labi. But there's an alarming results of study that revealed 9 out of 10 Filipinos suffer from dental caries and worse, the Philippines has the 2nd worst rate of decayed, missing and filled teeth in all of Asia. Yikes!

So I think the new project of Oral-B and UPDAA is very apt as they launched Smile Pilipinas. It aims to uplift the deteriorating state of oral health in the country.

Our lack of oral hygiene speaks how we take care of ourselves. We sometimes blame poor hygiene with our lack of money, expensive toothpaste, etc. And I'm glad that project such as this will help spread inspiration for better oral health.

During the launch which coincided with the centennial celebration of UP College of Dentistry (UPCD) and spearheaded by UPDAA, the three focus areas of the program were presented, namely, Advocacy, Public Good and Fund Raising.

Top actress and Oral-B brand ambassador Iza Calzado, who graced the launch of Smile Pilipinas thanks both partners and echoed the concern over the country's deteriorating oral health condition. "Let's not take this important aspect of our health for granted. As our oral health professionals have repeatedly said, Oral health is a vital part of over-all health. It's part of our personality, our heritage as a Filipino. Let's maintain the warmth and beauty of our smiles by learning how to care for our mouth, gums and teeth."

Happy Centennial UPDAA!

Can't leave the event without a pic with Iza Calzado. She's very pretty in person and really has a genuine smile. We learned that she's very conscious with her teeth and she also shared her ways of how she takes care of her teeth. Kahit gaano pa sya ka-busy, she'll make time to brush her teeth right after eating.

And with the country's top oral health professionals joined by the world's leading oral care brand in launching Smile Pilipinas, there may yet be hope for the state of oral health in the country as long as we all work together.

Cord blood, gives new hope for Leukemia

$

A video of a mother from Quebec fighting against leukemia recently went viral in YouTube. Her desperate plea – to find a compatible umbilical cord donor, the only hope for her second battle against leukemia. Mai Duong, a 34-year-old Vietnamese-Canadian mother is among the many patients diagnosed of cancer every four minutes. Leukemia - cancer of the body’s tissues that are responsible for forming blood including bone marrow and lymphatic system is among the top eight common cancers in the Philippines.

In 2005, the Philippine Cancer Society recorded 4,202 new cases, 2,243 of which is among males with 3.9 percent incidence rate while 1,959 cases were recorded among females with an incidence rate of 3.6 percent. With an average 5-year survival rate of only 25 percent, an estimated 3,498 deaths are expected with 1,863 in men and 1,635 among women. Normally, the body produces and grows the white blood cells in an orderly way. But for people with leukemia, their bone marrow produces white blood cells that are abnormal either in number or function. The symptoms of the disease varies from fever or chills, persistent fatigue and weakness, frequent or severe infections, unexpected weight loss, swelling of lymph nodes, bruising or bleeding easily, frequently recurring nosebleeds, visible red spots, bone pain or tenderness and excessive sweating at night.

Beyond the physical pain that leukemia patients experience, they are also susceptible to emotional stress and anxiety. And when it comes to the trauma and emotional pain, the patient’s family is no exception.  Studies showed that anxiety and posttraumatic stress are common to leukemia patients’ families during and even after suffering from the condition. Researchers found that childhood cancer treatment has a long-term impact on parents and families, thus, highlighting the need for psychological interventions during and after the cancer treatment.

But what gives the patients and their families a sense of hope for recovery is the life-saving effects of stem cell transplantation, including that from umbilical cord blood. Like Duong, Ryan Foo is also among the many leukemia victims who conducted a nationwide search for bone marrow stem cells. Foo suffered from leukemia at a very young age and found hope of recovery after his baby sister, Rachel was born. Rachel’s cord blood was collected and was processed and stored in Cordlife’s cord blood banking facility. Ryan has been in remission following the successful transplantation in Singapore in 2002.

In 2005, cord blood transplantation for a 9-year-old female diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia was performed according to Philippine Journal of Medicinev. The family had to search for one year before finding a cord blood unit in Japan that matches their precious child. The cost of the cord blood unit was about six-folds of how much it would have cost had they banked the child’s cord blood vi. Recent researches have proven the life-saving effects of umbilical cord blood stem cells in many life-threatening diseases including leukemia. Comparing cord-blood transplants with current standard leukemia therapies, two new studies indicated that leukemia patients who require stem cell transplants but do not have bone marrow donors now have greater chances to proceed with the treatment through the use of umbilical cord blood cells.

“Cord blood opens the door to provide transplants to thousands of leukemia patients who otherwise would not get a transplant,” said Mary J. Laughlin, M.D., of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center in Cleveland, in an article published by the Journal of National Cancer Institutei.

Laughlin, lead author of one of the two studies in cord blood technology published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also added that cord blood has two important advantages on bone marrow diseases.

With cord blood, there is faster identification of appropriate units for transplant. This is important since some conditions require urgent delivery and thus, delays are something medical providers aim to eliminate. Also, with cord blood, patients are more likely to get acceptable transplants because of the higher possibilities in the matching of donors.
Laughlin also added in the same report that they are suggesting the expansion of national cord blood registries to improve access to cord blood and eventually provide patients with more chances of getting matches.

“The more [cord blood samples] we bank the better will be the match and the availability to patients,” Eliane Gluckman, M.D., of the Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris, said in the same article. Gluckman also confirmed the possibility of cord blood transplantation in adults and noted its growing development in cancer research. She said that “many transplant centers thought it was not possible to use cord blood cells in adults. Now, more people will become aware of this possibility.” In addition to this, a breakthrough in cancer research was recently seen through a study led by the Loyola Medical Center oncologists. They found that growing cord blood stem cells in a laboratory before proceeding with transplant will significantly improve the survival and boost the number of patients who could benefit from it.i

Today, Filipinos can now benefit from these breakthroughs in cancer study by banking their babies’ stem cell-rich cord blood. This unique, highly-advanced service is now available in the country through Cordlife Philippines’ cord blood banking service which helps parents protect their child from the dangers of life-threatening diseases including leukemia.

“Stem cells are at the forefront of one of the most riveting and revolutionary areas of medicine today. While this could be a leap from the traditional treatments available, my fellow doctors and I do recognize cord blood stem cell transplantation as a standard form of treatment for various blood disorders, specially leukemia” Dr. Arvin Faundo, Medical Director of Cordlife Philippines.

With continuous advancement in cord blood stem cell applications, it’s imperative that parents seize the one chance to save their baby’s cord blood. For more information, download Cordlife’s FREE infopack @ www.cordlife.ph or call them at (02) 332 – 1888.

Metascreen, your baby's first step to a healthy life

Nearly one baby every hour each day dies abruptly. An estimated 7,000 babies die each year without warning. Parents are left clueless after the death as the possible causes remain unknown even after undergoing autopsy. All because of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is the unexplained death of babies usually occurring during sleep and striking under unexpected circumstances.

Even a healthy one-year old baby may be a victim of the condition which is often simply attributed to physical and environmental factors. Studies have shown that babies with physical conditions including brain abnormalities, low birth weight and respiratory infection have higher risk of dying an unexplained death.

Still some studies indicated that an infant’s sleeping position may also be a cause. Babies sleeping on their stomach side are more prone as they may suffer more difficulty in breathing. Those sleeping on soft surfaces and with their parents are also at risk.

To address the problem, various newborn screening tests are being employed as a means of identifying inborn disorders. For instance, dried blood spot screening, usually available in hospitals, can effectively screen the newborn of many metabolic disorders.

This type of screening, however, can only detect less than 50 metabolic disorders.
Given that there are far more metabolic disorders that place an infant in danger of SIDS, a new process called Metascreen, an expanded, advanced and non-invasive metabolic screening service, was developed.

Metascreen can detect up to more than 100 inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) through a painless method that uses the child’s urine sample collected after 48 hours of birth.
IEM is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the lack of enzymes needed in the body to maintain the normal body metabolic temperature.

This condition eventually causes the build-up of toxic substances and a deficiency of the critical ones. And because this may remain undetected during the infant stages of the baby, it poses as a silent threat to every newborn. Aside from causing sudden death, the disease may also trigger serious developmental issues and lifelong disease, if left untreated. Research showed that 10% of the SIDS cases can significantly be attributed to these inherited metabolic defects.

In the Philippines, this comprehensive newborn screening is offered by Cordlife Medical Philippines, the country’s most chosen cord blood and cord lining banking institution.  This is offered free to subscribers who will bank their cord blood and cord lining.  Metascreen is offered free to all mothers who bank their baby’s cord blood and cord lining at Cordlife. “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a serious and unseen condition that contributes to infant mortality,” said Dr. Arvin Faundo, Medical Director, Cordlife Medical Philippines. “Metascreen offers mothers the chance to reduce this incidence to secure the future and the wellbeing of their newborn.”

The screening test is performed by the Hong Kong Screening Centre Limited, a company that provides early and accurate detection of metabolic disorders in newborn babies.
“Here in the Philippines, we take pride in providing our clients with the best facilities to ensure that Cordlife is something they can depend on especially when it comes to securing the health of their newborn,” Faundo added.

Cordlife Medical Philippines, is a branch of Cordlife Group Limited which owns and operates processing and cryopreservation storage facilities across Asia including in Singapore, Hong Kong, India and Indonesia.

The Group’s processing and storage facilities in Singapore, Hong Kong, and India are also AABB, formerly known as American Association of Blood Banks, accredited, meeting the gold standard of private cord blood banking. We as parents or adults, we have huge responsibilities to guide our kids in proper way of watching television. We tend to let our kids watch anything they want without checking if it's age appropriate, good for them for as long as they will not bother us with whatever we are doing at the moment. But things will start to change.

This year marks the 30th year of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board or MTRCB. And to kick off the celebration of its anniversary, MTRCB formally launched its new infomercial last February 20 at 2:00 p.m. held at MTRCB Building.  Directed by renowned film and television director Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes, Jr., DGPI and conceptualized by Mr. Erlito “Lilit” Reyes, the infomercial features actors-spouses Ryan and Judy Ann Agoncillo in a typical morning situation at home.  In such scene, their depicted child picks up a word from a TV feature and asks the elders in the house what it means.

The infomercial aims to challenge parents and responsible adults to be aware of the media content our children are exposed to, and to be mindful of the MTRCB’s classification ratings.  Parents are also reminded that the primary duty in guiding their children as to the media the latter see still rests in them.

Details of the infomercial were discussed by Director Joey Reyes, Ryan and Judy Ann Agoncillo, Lilit Reyes and MTRCB Board Members Bibeth Orteza and Manet Dayrit, the latter being Co-Chairpersons of the Infomercial Committee.

The launch was culminated by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the TV Networks and theater operators to ensure showing of the infomercial and to continuously empower the general public towards discerning viewership and thus, among other objectives, inform parents as to the media and entertainment their children may see.

The infomercial will be aired in all television networks and theaters nationwide starting 25 February 2015.

Celebrity Moms - Precious Lara Quigaman-Alcaraz, Niña Corpuz-Rodriguez and Delamar Arias, all share one thing in common with every other moms and mom-to-be out there. All moms will agree with me that our ultimate desire and wish is to protect and secure our child’s future. All three are also among the growing number of mothers who have made the life-saving decision to bank their children’s umbilical stem cells. And they came out to share why they made this choice during the recently-held launching of Cordlife’s new and bigger facility at the Crowne Plaza last November 18.

“I’ve come to terms with the fact that many things can happen to Cooper in the future, both good and bad like getting seriously ill. I want to make sure that I’ve done my part in guaranteeing that Cooper has the best way to cope. And since there are so many advances in cord blood banking and the service is already made available and affordable here in the Philippines through Cordlife, I just had to get it for both my children,” Delamar Arias said.

Cordlife Philippines, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cordlife Group Limited which owns and operates processing and cryopreservation storage facilities across Asia including in Singapore, Hong Kong, India and Indonesia1. The company serves over 100,000 families worldwide, through affordable cord blood and cord lining banking services.

“Having found out that Cordlife is a recognized expert in the cord blood banking industry, with proven track record for successful release, I knew I found a reliable partner in providing a lifetime of protection for Noah. I’m glad I was able to seize the one chance to store my baby’s precious cord blood that he could use years from now should there be a need.” said Lara Quigaman, former beauty queen and actress.

Cord blood is the blood that remains in the baby’s umbilical cord. It is proven and tested to be a rich source of stem cells, cells that can form all the tissues and organs in our body. In particular, cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells2. The use of cord blood stem cells to cure life-threatening diseases including leukemia and other blood cancers is now considered standard. There are also on-going clinical trials on its use to treat cerebral palsy, and autism. Cord lining, on the other hand, contains two types of stem cells, namely Mesenchymal and Epithelial stem cells3, which are currently being studied for the treatment of stroke, myocardial infarction, and other potentials applications in regenerative medicine.

“As a health and wellness advocate, I get to talk to a lot of experts and most of them vouch for Cordlife. It's the name. It's the brand. It's tried and tested. It's something that has been there for a long time. I trust the experts that I talk to and I know that I made the best decision to bank my baby’s umbilical stem cells with Cordlife,” Nina Corpuz, Broadcast journalist said.

Cordlife One Chance, One Choice

As mothers, you will do anything for your child.  Even way before they are brought into this world, your instincts kick in and you tirelessly worry about your baby.  You want to learn everything there is to learn and more importantly, you want to protect them from anything and everything that can harm them be it the common cold or a fever; and if you had your way, you would gladly get sick for your child.  And your anxiety is not without reason, since there are many childhood diseases that can be harmful or even fatal to children.

Leukemia is perhaps the most common type of cancer compromising 47.8% of all childhood cancers1.  Hodgkin’s Disease1 or non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is the third childhood cancer comprising 9% of childhood cancer.  Aside from these types of cancers, certain brain disorders are also common in children. These include cerebral palsy and neuroblastoma.  Cerebral palsy severely impairs the development of the motor functions and afflicts 1-2 percent of the Philippine population2.  Neuroblastoma, on the other hand, causes the sufferer to lose the ability to empty the bladder, experience paralysis of the hips, feet, legs and uncontrolled movement.

Research into the use of cord blood and cord lining stem cells have been ongoing since the 1980s and has shown promise of saving lives and treating life-threatening diseases.  More than 30,000 cord blood stem cell transplants3 have already been performed since 1988.

When popular reporter, Niña Corpuz, decided to bank with Cordlife, she knew it was an investment in her baby’s and her family’s future.  Like any mom, Niña wants to give her baby the best that life has to offer and her baby’s long-term health and well-being was the primary reason for her to consider banking her baby’s cord blood and cord lining.

“Having my child was the most fulfilling moment of my life.  I never thought I’d be capable of so much love and sacrifice until I gave birth to my wonderful kids.” said Corpuz.  “Every day is just a joy and as early as now, I think of the many things my child and I will do, experience, and share.  I invested in my baby’s cord blood and cord lining because I want to be sure that my baby is given the best investment I could ever give.”

“The strides made in cord blood transplantation has made this manner of treating diseases more widely accepted by people,” said Dr. Arvin Faundo, Cordlife Philippines Medical Director. “Currently, umbilical cord blood transplant is considered as one of the standard forms of treatments for leukemia, among others. Also, many clinical trials4, 5 worldwide are ongoing for which the results are encouraging. In fact, Duke Medicine is studying the use of umbilical cord blood stem cells6 to treat autism and related brain disorders. While the trials are still in the initial phases, we are hopeful that these will yield positive results.”

Last June, Duke Medicine received USD 15 million funding by Atlanta-based Marcus Foundation. Apart from treating patients based in the United States, Duke Medicine has also opened its door for possible participants from outside of the country provided they meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria7 to be considered, patients must be aged between 24 months and 72 months old. The patient would also need to travel at least three times to Duke Medicine in the United States – at the infusion, the six- and 12-month follow up stages. A stipend worth U$1,000 will likewise be provided to the trial participant per trip to help defray travel expenses.

Today, Cordlife has served over 3,000 families in the Philippines alone and is trusted by 100,000 parents8 worldwide.

“We are definitely seeing a growing acceptance and openness of the Filipino market to the idea of umbilical cord lining and cord blood banking because I believe that the parents are now more proactive in finding better means to complete their family’s health protection plan.” said Michael Arnonobal, Cordlife Philippines Managing Director. “More importantly, today’s mothers see investing in their children and families as paramount to ensuring their legacy and their well-being.”
