You're Invited: Sandstorm Electronic Experience

On November 21st, The Philippines will bring forth a festival that will fuse its biggest talents in one massive celebration of sound – the Sandstorm Electronic Experience, produced as a collaboration between So Familiar Productions, The Wildfire Productions and Trance Till Dawn.  The event aims to make a staple when it comes to the music festival in Southeast Asia as well as  to make the Philippines, the next music destination.


The festival will be a 3 day event at 3 stages and over 50 of the country’s greatest performers from Metro Manila, Cebu, Bacolod  and Davao are representing every group from the city’s forward-thinking best scene producers, the enigmatic underground techno enthusiasts, the soulful house music lovers, the iconic bass music elite, to every hard hitter of the country’s biggest clubs and more. It’s about time that the country will have a festival  that pays homage to local electronic artists. A tribute to music and dominated by homegrown performers, in an absolutely breathtaking location by the sand and the water just south of the metro.

 Sandstorm’s official venue is the Southcrest Beach Resort. A 15 hectare of a scenic land near the beach in San Juan, Batangas. San Juan, Batangas is 116KM from Manila, known for the wide variety of Eco-Tourism activities like hiking and swimming on the emerald green sea. San Juan, Batangas is indeed the right place for the event. They also collect P20 for the tourism fee to keep San Juan the cleanest and greenest place you’ll stay. Each of the venue’s themed stages will give the audience a different sound and atmosphere, taking them on a thrilling adventure through different and wildly imaginative realms. The events, major transportation sponsor DLTB bus line will be shuttling guests from Manila – Batangas –Manila (The transport schedule is posted below).  Tickets are sold from P7,000 for VIP and P4,500 for General Admission.

20th Maaga ang Pasko with Jollibee and Breeze

 For 20 years, our favorite food chain Jollibee always gathers and collects toys and book donations to bring Christmas cheers to our less fortunate kids. And for the past, I've been seeing these boxes in all Jollibee branches every November with all kinds of toys from plushies, cars, animals, dolls, puzzles and books. They encouraged everyone to donate so we can spread the love to all Filipino kids.

And today, Jollibee is all set again to make Christmas a bigger and brighter celebration for children nationwide in the 20th Maaga ang Pasko by making Breeze as the official detergent partner in the clean-up campaign.

I get to witnessed the Laba Days from Jollibee and Breeze last Saturday when I joined their clean-up event and became a Jolly Toy Scout for a day. Not only I enjoyed my day cleaning toys and books, but I was able to spread my love even in a small way.



The two brands also tapped celebrity moms Regine Tolentino, Bettina Carlos and Breeze's Sige Mom Christine Bersola Babao and we worked as one family to clean and prepare the donated gifts.

Who can forget of what happened when the one of the strongest storm ever hit the Philippines particularly Tacloban, Leyte and some provinces in the Visayan region last year? No one! It was surreal, unexpected and we were unprepared of the aftermath. 


And now, I want to share with you that thru these disasters SM Prime has tied up with United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) to tackle the disaster reduction and to replace the existing Hyogo Framework for Action set to end next year.



The Hyogo Framework for Action is a 10-year plan to explain, describe, and detail the efforits required from different sectors to reduce disaster losses.


Like previous sessions, the event included presentations from subject matter experts as well as knowledge-sharing sessions among high-level participants.


Hand in hand, I know that will be able to come up with plans that will be able to minimize disasters that will make people suffer more.

The curtains have been lifted for Repertory Philippines’ Scrooge: A Family Musical, which will run until December 14, 2014 at the Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1 in Makati City. Scrooge concludes yet another accomplished year for the premier theater group. 

Did you say, “Bah, humbug!” just now? We don’t have three ghosts for you but here are 10 reasons that should ease your creased eyebrows, part your lips into a smile, and get you to the ultimate holiday show.  


Here are the  10 Reasons why you need to watch Scrooge:

1. Scrooge takes off from a classic.
Scrooge is the penny-pinching protagonist in Charles Dickens’ timeless novel A Christmas Carol. Published in 1843 in England, the story has since been repeated for centuries, its relevance never waning off. It’s a Christmas staple that nobody should miss.  

2. Scrooge stars veteran actors.
The title role is shared by Miguel Faustmann (Les Miserables, Julius Caesar) and Chinggoy Alonso (The Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera). Joining the roster are Raul Montesa, Cara Barredo, Oliver Usison, Dwight Angelo Vito Cruz, Chino Veguillas, Gabo Tiongson, and Soleil Luna Bueno. The play is directed by Ms. Carmen “Baby” Barredo, Rep’s artistic director and co-founder. With their talents pooled together, expect nothing short of excellence in the play. 

3. Scrooge is for the whole family.
The story is one that is best enjoyed with the entire family. Together, you watch the play and together, you shall have a more meaningful Christmas celebration. Scrooge should leave every loved one teeming with the holiday cheers. 

4. Old tale, new adaptation.
For Rep, no two Scrooge plays are alike. This year’s staging (the fourth in Rep history) takes its cue from the book, music, and lyrics of famed English writer-composer-lyricist Leslie Bricusse. His works on musicals include the Tony award-winning Stop the World — I Want to Get Off, Doctor Dolittle, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. So even if you know the story or have seen another Scrooge play, this will be an unfailingly inspiring and refreshing experience. 

5. Step back in time.
Scrooge takes place in its original setting, Victorian London. While the theater aircon won’t match the actual cold in England, you’ll get to feast your eyes on vivid sets designed by one of the lead actors, Miguel Faustmann. The era is steeped with vintage characteristics, from the bustling streets with carts and carriages, the townspeople’s clothes which are never short of simple, to the mix of humor and adorable formality in their speech. 

6. A chance to un-Scrooge yourself—or someone you know.
“What’s Christmas but a time of finding yourself a year older and not a day richer?” Do you find yourself saying something along this line? Redeem yourself with a treat to this play and let the feeling of catharsis help you realize what makes this season “the most wonderful time of the year.”

7. Enjoy the witty, fun songs.
Scrooge is rich in emotions best expressed through a motley of songs. Sing along to Tiny Tim as he describes in detail a beautiful day or Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig as they rally their guests into embracing the holidays with a jovial tune. The brilliance of the songs lies in their poetic lyrics, so make sure to listen closely.  

8. Show love for local theater.
The local theater scene is thriving with artistry best appreciated by the eyes of their fellow Filipinos. Through this is a foreign story, there ought to be unmistakable signs of Pinoy flavor into it. And don’t we love anything of our own?  

9. Learn something new about yourself. 
If the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and yet-to-come come after you, where do you think they’ll take you? Is it to a regretful past, a neglected present, and a dismal future, just like Scrooge? Or do you see yourself instead in kindhearted Bob Cratchit, toiling hard for little reward, or the all-loving, ever-optimistic nephew of Scrooge? With a variety of characters in the show, you’re bound to find one acting like yourself during the holidays, and learn a thing or two on how you can make this Christmas even better.

Journeying with Scrooge leads us to think deeper of our lives. At the end of the day, Christmas is about celebrating His birth and the people we care for, not so much about the wealth that won’t give back the satisfaction of being loved.

4th C2 Sarap ng Bukas Music Video-making winners

C2 held a video-making contest and all aspiring filmmakers were given a chance to showcase their talents and creativeness. All contestants were tasked to give their own interpretation of C2 Sarap ng Bukas with "Believe. Achieve" as their soundtrack.

I was invited to attend their announcement of 3 winners of the 4th C2 Sarap ng Bukas Music Video-making contest held at Eastwood City Mall. There were a total of 82 music video entries submitted but only 10 were lucky enough to make it to the finals and received php10,000 cash each and Php1,000 worth of C2 products .


“C2 Sarap ng Bukas Music Video-making contest is C2’s way to promote a cool and clean lifestyle while celebrating music, creativity, and the talent of young Filipino artists,” says Edwin S. Totanes, URC VP and Group head for URC-BCFG Marketing.

Before I show you the top 3, C2 also awarded the People's Choice Award. Ylona  Casabuena garnered a total of 1,104 Facebook likes.

Dolly Ann Acat took home Php50,000 as the 2nd runner-up with music video entitled "Your Biggest Dream"

Although she is determined not to make the same mistake Xo made  becoming an unwed mother at 16  Jane could not be closer to the two wonderful women who have shaped her life. They are very different people  Xo lives her life as a perpetual teenager, performing at local clubs and always looking for a new man, while Alba makes religion and prayer the focus of her life  but both women consider Jane the center of their universe and love the grounded, compassionate and ambitious young woman she has become.   Despite the conflicting influences of her mother and grandmother, Jane has managed to find a wonderful fiancé: a handsome, hard-working detective named Michael, who loves her enough to accept her detailed timeline for their future together and even her insistence on saving herself until theyre married. 


All of Janes meticulous life plans are turned upside down, however, when she sees her doctor for a routine check-up and is accidentally artificially inseminated with a specimen meant for the patient in the next room. Unbeknownst to her, the specimen belongs to Rafael, a reformed playboy and cancer survivor, who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works but also a former summer crush of hers.   A few weeks later, the unsuspecting Jane is faced with the most important decisions of her life. Will she continue with the pregnancy? How can she explain the situation to her fiancé and family? And what should she do about the wishes of the biological father, Rafael, and his scheming wife Petra? At the same time, Janes mother Xo is facing a life-changing decision of her own: after years of letting Jane and Alba believe she didnt know the identity of Janes father, the time has come to admit the truth  Janes father is Xos former boyfriend Rogelio. Making the situation even more surreal, Rogelio is now a huge telenovela star, and he definitely wants to meet his unsuspecting daughter.   Though she has always tried to be the responsible good girl who does the right thing, Janes normally quiet life has suddenly become as dramatic, complicated and unpredictable as the telenovelas she has always loved.

In the new comedy series Jane The Virgin, Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane Villanueva, whose meticulous life plans are suddenly turned upside down when she is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Named the Next Big Thing and one of the Top 35 Latinos Under 35 by The Hollywood Reporter, Gina Rodriguezs profile has been rising steadily since her breakout performance as the titular character in Filly Brown which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 and brought Rodriguez an Imagen award winner for Best Actress in a Feature Film.

Growing up in Chicago, Rodriguez started performing at age 7 with the salsa dance company Fantasia Juvenil. She went on to work with other companies including Los Soneros Del Swing, performing at several Salsa Congresses in Chicago, California, New York and Puerto Rico. At 16, Gina was one of thirteen teens to be accepted into Columbia University NY- Theatrical Collaboration taught by Richard Niles, where she wrote, directed and performed original works.

She fell in love with New York and was accepted into the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Rodriguez had four years of intense theatre training at both the Atlantic Theatre Company and Experimental Theatre Wing, working with David Mamet, William H. Macy and Rosemary Quinn. Directly after graduation, she booked her first lead role in the feature film Tiny Dancer. Next, she originated the role of Frida Kahlo in the world premiere of Casa Blue: The Last Moments in the Life of Frida Kahlo, at the American Stage Theatre. She continued to work in NY with multiple theatres and her work in film and TV steadily grew, including series Jonny Zero, Army Wives, and Law & Order, in addition to several shorts and indie films. One short film, Osvaldos, earned Rodriguez a Best Actor award at the First Run Film Festival in NY.

After the years of success in NY, Rodriguez booked a lead role in a feature film Go For It in which she received a 2011 Imagen Awards nomination. After this, Rodriguez booked her first co-star role on CBS Eleventh Hour. She went on to book series regular roles on web series Eden's Court and No Names; her first studio film Our Family Wedding with America Ferrera; and a lead in the film Superchicas. Since then she has also guest starred on the The Mentalist, Happy Endings and Ten Things I Hate About You.

Next came one of Rodriguezs most exciting roles to date, Filly Brown. Originally, this role had been written as a spoken word artist, an area in which Rodriguez had experience, but upon meeting Rodriguez, the producers changed the part to a rapper. After an outstanding audition,
in which Gina provided an impromptu rap performance, she secured the role. She collaborated with music producers, E Dub and Khoolaid from Silent Giant, to come up with original songs for the film. Rodriguez went on to star in the dark indie comedy Sleeping with Fishes, written and directed by Nicole Gomez Fisher. The film focuses on Alexis Rodriguez Fish, who returns home to her family after the death of her cheating husband.

Rodriguez starred in the Cima Productions film Marching Banda, playing a single mother of a boy whose estranged father comes back into their lives and begins teaching him traditional regional Mexican music and incorporating it into the schools marching band repertoire. She also starred in a supporting role in Snap, a reunion with her Filly Brown director Youssef Delara, which had its world premiere at SXSW this past year. She also completed production on another indie film, California Winter, with Rutina Wesley.

Rodriguez is a supporter of Inspira, an organization that works to spotlight Latino leaders who shape their communities. She also works with the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts and the Boyle Heights Learning Collaborative.

She lives in Los Angeles, California.

World Toilet Day 2014 with Domex

Traveled all the way to Baseco, Manila to witnessed the World Toilet Day 2014 from Domex. Unilever Philippines, through its leading toilet-cleaner brand Domex, and its partners, celebrated World Toilet Day 2014 at the Baseco Compound in Tondo, Manila by announcing the success of their One Million Clean Toilets Movement.

Observed annually on November 19, World Toilet Day aims to put a spotlight on the 2.5 billion people across the globe who do not have access to clean, functional toilets. Of these, almost half—1.1 billion people—practice open defecation and are exposed to infectious diseases brought about by poor toilet sanitation.


Vice Mayor of Manila, Isko Moreno also graced the event.

In November 2013, the movement was launched to advocate disease prevention through improved toilet sanitation. By pledging support for the movement via social media and on-ground activities, homeowners agreed to conscientiously maintain their own clean, safe, and hygienic bathrooms. For every pledge received, Domex donated P5 to UNICEF’s Sanitation Program, a global fund aimed towards improving access to basic sanitation in deprived areas around the world, including the Philippines.


Along with its partners—the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Philippine Public Health Administration (PPHA), city government of Manila, and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation—Unilever revealed that the One Million Clean Toilets Movement has garnered a total of 1,274,038 pledges nationwide, exceeding its target set a year ago.

“We are thankful that more than one million people became part of our proper toilet sanitation advocacy. They not only pledged to keep their household toilets clean, but they also helped Unilever and UNICEF provide clean toilet facilities to communities which need it most,” said Chito Macapagal, Unilever VP for Corporate Affairs and Sustainability.

“In line with the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan which aims to improve the health and well-being of more than one billion people worldwide, Unilever Philippines will embark on a nationwide campaign for proper toilet hygiene in barangays, where intervention will have more impact on peoples’ lives, especially those of children,” said Dennis Chua, Domex brand manager.


Toilet sanitation: Reach more to teaching more
Building on the success of the One Million Clean Toilets Movement, Unilever and its partners have also announced the second phase of this advocacy. In 2015, they will be teaching effective household toilet sanitation to another one million people in over 2,000 barangays nationwide.

Tokyo Tokyo has always been our favorite food hang-out whenever we want to have japanese fixed. And I can't believe that Tokyo Tokyo is celebrating their 29 years in the business. I was invited to celebrate with them and have an Autumn Affair at their Tokyo Tokyo BGC branch a few weeks ago. 


In 1985, it was the only quick-service Japanese restaurant that offered unlimited rice with its dishes, which grew to be some of Filipino diners’ most popular cravings. Growing up, I was fond of collecting what I call anik-anik like stationaries, scissors, scotch tapes, papers, etc. I don't know why, but every time I see them inside my drawer before, I always arrange them, clean them and just look at them. SM Aura Premier launches Giant Dandelions at the Sky Park

Last November 16, 2014, SM Aura Premier launched the Giant Dandelions, a forest of 90 larger than life light flowers where people may freely walk, take photos, and enjoy the lights and music. 
One of the first attractions of this kind in SM Supermalls, Giant Dandelions features flowers in 160 cm to 210 cm high with spectacular dandelion heads made from approximately 9,000 recycled water bottles cut and connected to one another by nylon weave. Each flower is lit by a color changing LED strip.


Made by Manila based French-Filipino artist Olivia D’Aboville, the Giant Dandelions is one of the main attractions this season. The installation is a light show set to music playing every hour from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM from November 16 to January 16, 2015 at the Sky Park of SM Aura Premier. 



SM Supermalls continue its efforts in promoting environmental awareness and eco-friendly sustainable development. Aboville has been practicing recycling in her art since she was still a student in design in Paris. From plastic spoons to water bottles to cocktail stirrers, she is drawn to mass-produced objects. These objects refer to our consumerist society that is inevitably polluting our environment. She manipulates and recycles materials to create new work. She is very sensitive to light, fluidity and movement and known for her works inspired by the theme of the ocean. The use of LED lighting is systematic in her works.

Aboville graduated with honors from ESAA Duperré Paris in 2009 specializing in tapestry and textile structures and adapted the techniques to create her own woven forms. Aboville ventured in the design industry joining Kenneth Cobonpue’s design house, Hive. Her Anemone lamp, a spin off from her Coral Flower sculptural light was showcased in the major design fairs around the world landed a spot at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris for French ELLE Décoration magazine’s 25th year anniversary. D’Aboville has exhibited in museums, galleries, hotels and festivals in Paris, Lyon, Hong Kong, Manila, NY and Singapore.
